Large 8vo. vii[1]112pp. Second (expanded) edition. Half green morocco over green cloth boards with single gilt rule, spine in compartments with raised bands, and a decorative repeated motif. Titled in gilt to spine. Top edge gilt, minor rubs, marbled endpapers, bookplate of 'Moncure Biddle' some foxing. Bound by Donnelles. Fifty full-page hand-colored costume plates and woodcuts in the text. Hippolyte Bellange (1800-1866) French battle painter. "The wars of the first Napoleon influenced his art, and while a youth, he produced several military drawings in lithography. He afterward pursued his studies under Gros and with the exception of some portraits devoted himself exclusively to battle-pieces." (Bryan). These plates were first published with only 44 plates in P. M. Laurent's 'Histoire de l'Empereur Napoleon.' SCARCE. No record at auction in the USA since 1919. Bellange was a French artist and printmaker who, at the age of 16, entered the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros. Bellange published 15 albums of lithographs devoted to patriotic military subjects, then turned his talents to oil painting. Colour plates in order: 1. Frontispiece.
