Large folio, vignette title, 22 plates of which two are double, 4 plans, one of which is a double page map, 15 are coloured, a half title. Contemporary black half morocco over pebble cloth, gilt ruled, lettered in gilt to spine, gilt compartments etc. This work is dedicated to Viscount Kingsborough, who himself, at great expense, produced one of the highly important illustrated works on the archeology of the region. By the age of 19 Waldeck had explored the Cape of Good Hope. He had also studied art under French artist David. Understanding art helped Waldeck to capture his findings on his travels more vividly on paper, aiding documentation. After selling to the French Government most of his drawings of the Palenque ruins, his work was published in 1863. He was made a member of the Council of American Archeology in 1836.
